Amazon Increases Web Services Again

Amazon is adding to its available web services by adding SimpleDB, a web-based database, to the mix of Amazon Web Services (AWS). You’ll want to sign up fast as this is currently a limited Beta, offered on a first come, first serve basis. SimpleDB is the opposite of Amzaon’s Simple Storage Services (S3). Where S3 offers storage for large bits of data, SimpleDB is for smaller, related pieces of information. The database works well with simple relationships to data, but is not suggested for complex joins. Unions are available.

SimpleDB is the same database used by Amazon’s Alexa Web.

The charges for the service are below:

$0.14 per Amazon SimpleDB machine hour consumed (with no minimum)
$0.10 per GB for all inbound data
$0.18 per GB for up to 10 TB of month’s data out
$0.16 per GB for next 40 TB of month’s data out
$0.13 per GB for over 50 TB of month’s data out
$1.50 per GB per month, for storage
